THE GOTTMAN COUPLES THERAPY METHOD
The goals of the Gottman Method for Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship. This approach draws on nine components of healthy relationships, known as the Sound Relationship House theory. These include:
Building love maps
Sharing fondness and admiration
Turning towards (as opposed to turning away from each other)
The positive perspective (seeing your partner as a friend, not an adversary)
Managing conflict
Making life dreams come true
Creating shared meaning
Trust
Commitment
This therapeutic approach combines wisdom from research and practice to support and strengthen marriages, families, and relationships. It aims to not only support and repair troubled marriages and committed relationships but also strengthen happy ones.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING & COUPLES THERAPY
Research shows that negativity makes a big impact on the brain and that unless couples take steps to counteract instances of negativity, they risk growing apart emotionally. Our therapists can help identify and address the states of mind and behaviours shown to underlie intimacy and help partners maintain a positive orientation towards each other that can sustain them in upsetting circumstances. Although individual perspectives and wishes are addressed, all couples therapy at LifeConnect is conducted with both partners together, and therapists do not privilege secrets.
COUPLET PROGRAM
LifeConnect has developed a self-paced online program for couples called Couplet, designed to help couples better understand each other and grow together. Our team offers relationship counselling and marriage counselling specialists in North Sydney and Byron Bay, as well as providing online services to those that need them.
